Why installing before travelling is a good idea
Installing your eSIM before you travel means you can set it up in a calm environment with reliable Wi-Fi, rather than scrambling at the airport after a long flight. When you land, your eSIM is already installed and ready to connect — you just need to enable data roaming and your phone will pick up a local network.
Benefits of installing before you travel:
- You have reliable Wi-Fi at home for the download
- You can troubleshoot any installation issues before you travel
- You avoid the stress of setting up connectivity at the airport
- You can call a ride, open maps and message family the moment you land
Does installing an eSIM start my data plan?
For most travel eSIMs, installing the eSIM does not start your data plan or clock. The plan typically activates when the eSIM first connects to a cellular network at your destination. This means you can install days or weeks before your trip without consuming any data or reducing your validity period.
However, some eSIMs have specific activation rules. Check your plan details or ask your provider if you are unsure when activation begins.
How to install an eSIM before travelling
On iPhone:
- Make sure you are connected to Wi-Fi
- Open the activation link or scan the QR code provided by your eSIM provider
- Follow the prompts to add the eSIM profile
- Label the eSIM (e.g. Travel eSIM) so you can identify it in settings
- Keep the eSIM turned off until you arrive at your destination
On Samsung / Android:
- Make sure you are connected to Wi-Fi
- Go to Settings → Connections → SIM card manager → Add mobile plan
- Scan the QR code or enter the activation code
- Follow the prompts to add the eSIM
- Keep the eSIM turned off until you arrive
What to do when you land
When you arrive at your destination:
- Turn on your travel eSIM line in settings
- Set it as your data line
- Enable data roaming for the eSIM line
- Turn off your home SIM's data to avoid roaming charges
- Restart your phone if it does not connect automatically
Your phone should connect to a local network within a few minutes. See Should data roaming be on with an eSIM? for detailed roaming instructions.
Can I install multiple eSIMs before travelling?
Yes, many modern phones support multiple eSIM profiles. You can install eSIMs for different destinations before your trip and switch between them as you travel. However, only one eSIM can be active for data at a time.
See Can I have two eSIMs on one phone? for more details.
What if I change my travel dates?
If you install your eSIM before travelling and then change your travel dates, the eSIM will remain installed and ready. Since most plans activate on first network connection, changing dates usually does not affect your plan. If you have specific start date requirements, check your plan details or contact your provider.
